The course is an out-and-back route that follows the shoreline to a turnaround point near the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base and returns to the start area. The entire route is on the beach; shoes are optional and runners may pass through shallow water depending on the tide. The event features a novelty "shark" that gets a head start.
Awards are presented to the top overall male and female finishers and to the top three finishers in 5-year age groups. After the race there is a potluck and "talk story" gathering; participants may bring a dish to share, with an ice cooler available for items needing cold storage.
