Juneau Ridge Race
The Juneau Ridge Race is an approximately 15 miles trail race that starts and finishes in Cope Park in downtown Juneau. The course follows roads and trails through town to Basin Road and Perserverance Trail, ascends to the summit of Mt. Juneau at about mile 4.9 gaining roughly 3,500 feet, traverses the Juneau Ridge for three miles, then descends into Granite Basin and returns to Cope Park via The Flume. Total elevation gain for the course is about 5,000 feet. Finish times have ranged from about 2 hours 15 minutes to 6 hours for past editions.
The event includes three remote checkpoints that will carry only a limited supply of food and water. Racers are expected to carry what they need; runners who do not plan to drink untreated groundwater should carry their own water or a personal filter. Mandatory kit includes a wind and water resistant jacket, a long sleeve shirt, an emergency space blanket or bivy, a beanie or ear covering, gloves, water, and food. A summit time limit requires participants to leave the Mt. Juneau summit checkpoint in adequate condition by the posted cutoff or they will be pulled from the race and must descend the Mt. Juneau trail.
Participation is limited to entrants aged 18 and older on race day; 16 and 17 year olds may petition for entry and no participants under 16 are allowed. The race is a USATF sanctioned event and is part of the Alaska Mountain Running Grand Prix series. The field is presently filled to capacity and a waitlist is being maintained. Post race activities at Cope Park include food featuring wood fired pizza and awards later in the afternoon. Registration closes on June 21.
