John Hewitt Memorial Shelf Moor Fell Race
The John Hewitt Memorial Shelf Moor Fell Race is a six-mile (9.6 km) fell race on Shelf Moor above Old Glossop, with about 1,499 ft (457 m) of ascent. The route is flagged and marshalled, starting along the Mossy Lea track and finishing near the bus turning circle on Shepley Street. It passes close to three aircraft wrecks—James’s Thorn, another wreck near Ashton Clough, and the B‑29 Overexposed at 2038 ft—offering wide views from the trig point on a clear day.
FRA kit is required. The race honors former Chairman John Hewitt and emphasizes joy, camaraderie, and refreshments. Course records: 39:45 (men) and 46:28 (women, 2023). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
