The course covers a distance of 15.2 miles, following a route from the intersection of Hooker and Main in White to the Campanile on the campus in Brookings. Participants travel primarily via county roads between the two towns.
The event offers several participation options for individuals and groups:
- Individual 15.2 miles

- 3-person relay (each member runs 5 miles)
- 5-person relay (each member runs 3 miles)
Relay teams are permitted to be all-male, all-female, or co-ed. All participants who complete the full 15.2-mile distance receive a finisher medal. Registered entrants are provided with a long-sleeve, moisture-wicking T-shirt.
Cash prizes are awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers in the individual category. The first-place finishers receive $200, second place receives $100, and third place receives $50. The event is organized by the Prairie Striders and has a history spanning over six decades of annual competition. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
