About the race
The Brookings Marathon is an annual road-racing event in Brookings, South Dakota, traditionally held in May. The event traces its origins to 1970 and is described as the 25th oldest marathon in the United States and the third oldest among marathons run every year since inception.
The course passes through parks, gardens, university grounds and historic neighborhoods. Runners encounter bike paths and tree-lined streets along routes that retain sections of the original course layout. Hundreds of volunteers support runners on course, and there are opportunities for family and friends to provide roadside encouragement.
The event program includes multiple race formats:
- Marathon
- Half marathon
- Marathon relay
- 5K
