Maunawili Twisted Relay - Maunawili Out and Back
This relay uses the Maunawili Demonstration Trail as a 22-mile out and back course. The route follows the Koʻolau mountain contour in and out of valleys and includes long runnable sections, as well as heat, high humidity, mud, and technical terrain. The middle eight miles of the course are unmarked; the trail will be marked at both ends with bright pink ribbons and flags, and blue ribbons indicate the wrong direction.
Teams consist of two runners. At check-in each team receives a bib number that must be displayed on the front of the body for timing. Runner exchanges occur at the hairpin turnaround aid station; both team members must check in with aid station volunteers and exchange car keys and the relay baton.
Hydration and cupless policy: the event is cupless. Participants must carry a minimum of 2 liters of fluid and use their own reusable cup or bottle for aid station and post-event hydration. Runners must fill containers at the turnaround and must leave the turnaround aid station within four hours of their start.
Logistics and facilities: the start and finish are at the Maunawili Ditch Trailhead on Waikupanaha Street in Waimanalo. There are no restrooms at the start/finish or at the aid station. Carpooling is required; if driving, vehicles must be parked completely off the roadway on the shoulder and face the direction of travel.
Trail etiquette: the trail is open to the public and equestrians have right of way. Awards are given to top relay finishers and light refreshments will be available at the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
