HURL Elkhorn - Helena, Montana
HURL Elkhorn is a trail running event in the Elkhorn Mountains near Helena, Montana. Races start and finish at the Willard Creek Trailhead at the end of Forest Service Road 4014. Courses run on technical single-track trails, primitive or double-track jeep roads, and maintained forest service road; there is no pavement on course.

The 50 Mile course includes extensive technical single track, primitive jeep road sections, and a short maintained forest service road. The course lists approximately 13,400 feet of elevation gain and a maximum elevation just under 9,000 feet. There are eight aid stations on course, with the longest gap between aid stations about seven miles. Trail sections are closed to motorized vehicles and parts of the route go through remote, roadless backcountry.
The 50K course follows technical single track and primitive jeep road, with about 7,900 feet of elevation gain and a maximum elevation near 8,000 feet. Five aid stations serve the course, and the longest distance between aid stations is about eight miles.
The 13.1 Mile course is on 100% technical single track with creek crossings, about 3,300 feet of elevation gain and maximum elevation near 7,200 feet. Two aid stations are located along the route; the longest gap is about six miles.
Wildlife common to the area may include deer, elk, moose, bear, coyote, mountain goat and cattle. Packet pickup is scheduled Friday, July 31, 2026 at the Montana City Volunteer Fire Department (1192 Highway 282); course briefings are listed for that pickup day. Registration closes Monday, July 27, 2026 at 11:59 PM MT.
The event is held in remote, rugged terrain. Depending on fire restrictions or smoke, the format could change to self-supported or be cancelled; organizers will announce any changes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
