Event Overview
The Howl at the Moon Ultra is a timed endurance event held at Kennekuk Road Runners in Danville, Illinois. The event features separate eight-hour and four-hour divisions for runners and walkers.
Course Details
Participants complete a 3.25-mile loop course through a park. The mixed-terrain route includes grass, gravel, and pavement. The loop is run in a clockwise direction and features a climb up Watermelon Hill. The start and finish are at the Laury Barn (Big Red Barn). A full aid station is located around the halfway point of the loop, and another is at the top of Watermelon Hill. Participants can also set up their own aid and crew support at the start/finish area.
For the final segment of the race, runners and walkers transition from loops to a quarter-mile out-and-back course to maximize distance within the time limit.
Logistics
Participation is limited to 250 registrants. Registration fees are $85 for the eight-hour events and $75 for the four-hour events. Headsweats t-shirts are available for an additional fee, and a swag bag is included. The event has a strict no-refund, no-deferral, and no-transfer policy.
Packet pickup is at the Laury Barn, with times available on Friday and Saturday morning before each event. A free 3.25-mile course preview, the "Baby Howl 5K," is offered on Friday evening. Overnight camping is available for a $20 fee for both Friday and Saturday nights; canopies can be set up Friday afternoon.
Rules and Awards
Each participant is assigned a personal scorer to count loops; participants must check in with their scorer after each loop. Pacers are only permitted for the eight-hour race after 11:00 AM, with one pacer allowed per loop.
Awards are given for top overall finishers and age group placements. Post-race food is provided for registered participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
