Horsethief Canyon Trail Run - September 12, 2026
The event is a 10K trail run held at Kanopolis State Park near Marquette, KS, beginning at the Buffalo Tracks Trailhead. The course follows the Horsethief Canyon Trail, a multi-use route used by equestrians, hikers, and mountain bikers. The surface includes hills, rocky sections, sand, and up to five shallow water crossings. The route begins with approximately one half mile of road followed by about six miles of trail; overall trail length may be shorter during high water conditions.
Race-day registration is available at the start/finish location. Entry fees are listed as $25 without a shirt and $40 with a shirt. General registration closes on Mon, Sep 7.
Facilities at the trailhead include restrooms. Camping areas and showers are available within one mile of the Horsethief Canyon day use area. One self-serve water stop will be provided on the trail; participants are asked to dispose of cups in the provided trash box. Snacks and drinks are provided after the run.
Directions to the trailhead note that from K-141 drivers turn west at the Venango Park turn, then take Horsethief Drive into Kanopolis State Park and follow signs to the Horsethief Trailhead. Visitors must purchase a day use permit for $5.00 per vehicle at the pay booth or Park Office unless they have a Kansas Parks permit. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
