Hood and Portland To Coast Relay
The Providence Hood and Portland To Coast relays are multi-leg team relays across Oregon. Teams of 8 to 12 members take turns running or walking sequential legs that move from the slopes of Mount Hood toward the Pacific coast. The event includes two principal formats and noted distances:
- Hood to Coast relay: 196 miles
- Portland To Coast relay: 128 miles
The event draws teams from over 40 countries and all 50 states. Teams commonly travel with two support vans and follow an assigned rotation so each member maintains the same sequence of legs throughout the race. Team limits have filled for multiple decades and the entry lottery has been full for many consecutive years.
Safety and conduct rules are central. Every participant must provide emergency contact information on the race bib. During nighttime hours participants must carry a flashlight, wear a front and back LED flasher, and wear a reflective vest until daylight. Headphones in the ear are discouraged and music played loudly may be restricted by race officials. Teams must supply basic first aid and ample water because aid stations are not guaranteed.
Course rules include vehicle size limits, parking restrictions near exchanges, no bicycles or dogs accompanying participants, and penalties or disqualification for alcohol on the course, unsafe conduct, or failure to use designated sleeping areas. The course and finish area close in the evening and teams still on course may be required to alter their plans to finish safely. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
