Hood & Portland To Coast Relay
The Hood & Portland To Coast relays are long-distance team relays across Oregon terrain, starting near Mount Hood and ending at beaches on the Pacific Ocean. The event draws participants from more than 40 countries and all 50 states and has historically reached its team limit for many years.
Teams consist of 8–12 members, most commonly 12, and typically operate with two vans while rotating runners or walkers through a sequence of legs. Team logistics frequently include carrying a wrist wrap and wearing a race bib with emergency contact information.
Distances:
- About 196 miles for Hood To Coast
- About 128 miles for Portland To Coast
Safety and race operations include required visibility gear during night and early-morning hours: a flashlight, one front and one back LED flasher, and a reflective vest until morning. Radios are positioned at every exchange point. Teams are responsible for basic first aid supplies, substantial water for their vehicle, and appropriate fire prevention equipment. Sleeping is allowed only in designated fields and small tents are restricted in certain exchanges.
Race rules specify vehicle size limits, single on-course vehicle display requirements, rotation order for participants, and prohibitions such as bicycles, dogs, and open alcoholic containers on the course. Penalties and disqualifications are applied for violations of safety or conduct rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
