About the Event
The Hone Quarry Ultra is a 41.4-mile trail endurance race in the Shenandoah Valley. The course begins and ends at Briery Branch, entering the George Washington National Forest and winding through the mountains around the Hone Quarry Recreational Area.
The Course
The route is a large loop with a few out-and-back sections, climbing and descending several mountain ridges. It includes technical single-track trails, towering cliff walls, open meadows, waterfalls, and impressive vistas. Specific landmarks include the Hidden Rocks trail, the "Lover's Leap" Overlook, Hone Quarry Falls, the HQ Reservoir, and Flagpole Knob. The total elevation gain is approximately 8,000 feet.
Race Details
The event has a strict participant limit of 125 runners. The cutoff time is 13 hours and 15 minutes. Due to the remote nature of the course, crews and pacers are not allowed. Drop bags are permitted at three aid stations: Union Springs (mile 12.7), HQ (mile 19.5), and Big Hollow (mile 29.2). Six fully stocked aid stations are available on the course.
Awards
The top three male and female finishers receive a podium award and prize money: $125 for first place, $100 for second place, and $75 for third place.
Location and Facilities
The start, finish, and parking are located at the Briery Branch Church Activity Building in Dayton, Virginia. Restroom facilities are available there. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
