Hone Quarry Ultra

The Hone Quarry Ultra is a trail endurance race that begins and ends at the Briery Branch area in the Shenandoah Valley. The course enters the George Washington National Forest and follows single track and mountain trails around the Hone Quarry Recreational Area.

Runners pass towering cliff walls, open meadows, several waterfalls, and broad vistas. Course highlights named for the route include the Hidden Rocks trail, Lover's Leap Overlook, Hone Quarry Falls, HQ Reservoir, and Flagpole Knob. The loop includes a few out and back sections and about 8,000 feet of ascent and 8,000 feet of descent on a technical mountain course.

Distance for the main event is 41.4 miles. The race is limited to 125 runners per the Forest Service permit. Crews and pacers are not allowed because of remote access. Drop bags are allowed at Union Springs (mile 12.7), HQ (mile 19.5), and Big Hollow (mile 29.2). There are six fully stocked aid stations along the route.

Start and finish use the Briery Branch Church Activity Building, where parking and restroom facilities are provided. Podium awards are given to the top three male and top three female finishers, with prize money for the top three places. Registration is non refundable; transfers are allowed and a one year deferral may be requested before March 1, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
