Event overview
The Hone Quarry Ultra is a trail endurance race that starts and finishes at the Briery Branch Church Activity Building in the Shenandoah Valley near Dayton, VA. The course is a large loop with some out-and-back sections and is routed partly through the George Washington National Forest. Participant numbers are limited to 125 by the event permit.
Course and logistics
Distance is 41.4 miles with approximately 8,000' of ascent and 8,000' of descent. The route passes single-track trails, towering cliff walls, open meadows, several waterfalls, and viewpoints such as "Lover's Leap" Overlook and Hone Quarry Falls. There are six fully stocked aid stations. Crews and pacers are not allowed due to remote access. Drop bags are permitted at Union Springs (mile 12.7), HQ (mile 19.5), and Big Hollow (mile 29.2). Restroom facilities and parking are available at the start/finish location.
Entry, cutoff and prizes
The race applies a cutoff of 13 hours 15 minutes. Entry is limited and the organizer enforces a non-refundable registration policy; transfers to another runner are allowed. Prior to March 1, 2026, registrants may request a one-year deferral. Prize money is offered to the top three male and top three female finishers: $125, $100, and $75 respectively.
