The Hiraethog Trail Run Challenge
The Hiraethog Trail Run Challenge is a one day, fully guided and supported run that follows a 42.4 mile linear trail from Pentrefoelas to Bodfari in the Vale of Clwyd. The route includes 5,325 ft of ascent and crosses the high ground of Mynydd Hireathog.
The waymarked route passes through Clocaenog Forest, by hidden reservoirs and across remote land with views west towards Northern Snowdonia and east towards the Clwydian Hills. The course covers ground that is not heavily trodden and is described as remote in places.
The event is organised with checkpoint support. The day is split into six sections, each approximately 6-9 miles in length. At the end of each section staff meet participants with spare gear, first aid provision, food and drink. Fully qualified guides lead the group and set the pace.
Average moving time is described as just under 4 mph, with rest stops at each checkpoint and an emphasis on maintaining progress rather than speed. On completion participants receive a wooden medal and a certificate and may record memories of the route and company encountered during the day.
Spaces for the challenge are offered in limited numbers and the organisers provide support and provisioning throughout the route. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
