About the race
Hillman Ride and Fly: Ride & Tie is a team event at Hillman State Park near Pittsburgh, PA, held as part of the Steel City Human and Horse Endurance Festival. Teams consist of two people and one horse who alternate running and riding by leapfrogging along the course.
Distances offered include:
- 31 mile long course
- 13 mile short course
- 6 mile intro course
Aid stations are located approximately every 5 to 7 miles. The 6 mile intro event is scheduled in the evening. The 2027 routes will be similar to the 2026 routes. Free primitive camping is available Thursday through Sunday for festival participants. All participants must be members of the Ride and Tie Association; membership options include a one-day membership and an annual membership, with discounts for juniors. Bib transfers and horse changes are allowed and free until July 27.
The event has a structured refund and fee policy: a late fee applies to entries received after July 11; full refunds less processing fees are available until July 11; refunds less $50 and processing fees for ride expenses are available until July 24; no refunds after July 24 and no refunds for no-shows. Distance changes are permitted with specific refund rules depending on the date. The event is rain or shine; organizers will reroute to gravel roads if trail conditions would be dangerous or damaging.
