Highlands Sky 40M
The Highlands Sky 40M is a long-distance trail race held in Davis, West Virginia on Saturday before Father’s Day, June 20th, 2026. The event is the twenty-second running of the 40 mile course and is centered at Canaan Valley Resort State Park.
The route travels primarily through Monongahela National Forest and passes sections of Timberline Ski Resort and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, finishing at Canaan Valley State Park. The course crosses the Roaring Plains and the Dolly Sods Wilderness Areas. Dolly Sods contains the highest plateau in the eastern United States and features rocky terrain, stunted trees, and mountaintop meadows traditionally called the sods.
Trail surfaces include woodland paths, ancient sphagnum bogs, rocky and boulder filled plains, heath barrens, northern hardwoods, and stunted red spruce. These landscape elements indicate varied footing and changing vegetation along the route. The West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners club organizes the event in partnership with the Monongahela National Forest. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
