Hernando Water Tower 10K and Half Marathon
The Hernando Water Tower 10K and Half Marathon is an annual road race held in Hernando, Mississippi. The event takes place in the historic districts of the city, highlighting local landmarks and the scenic areas surrounding the community. Participants pass through tree-lined streets and view the historic Hernando Water Tower, a structure built in 1925 that is designated as an official Mississippi Landmark.
The event offers two main distances:
- 13.1 miles (Half Marathon)
- 6.21 miles (10K)
The courses begin at the historic Town Square in the heart of the city. For the 13.1 miles distance, there are specific pace requirements to ensure safety on the course. Participants must be able to maintain an 18-minute per mile average pace. Additionally, runners must reach the 10-mile marker by a specific cutoff time to remain under race supervision. If participants are still on the course after the official closure, they must follow all state and local traffic laws.
Proceeds from the race support the Hernando Excel By 5 Dolly Parton Imagination Library. This program focuses on early childhood literacy by providing age-appropriate books to enrolled children from birth through age five. The initiative aims to build a foundation for learning by delivering one free book to these children every month. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
