Event Overview
The Henry Vilas Zoo - Run Wild is a community fundraising event held in Madison, Wisconsin. This event supports the Henry Vilas Zoo and the Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. Proceeds contribute to the preservation of endangered species, including black rhinos and Grevy's zebra, and provide medical care for wildlife. The Ol Jogi Conservancy spans 58,000 acres and works with local communities to provide a safe habitat for indigenous species.
The event features several participation options for different preferences:
- 10K Run: A timed running race.
- 5K Run: A timed running race.
- 5K Walk: A non-timed version of the 5.1-kilometer course.
- Kids Fun Run: A 1-mile race for children.
Course and Logistics
The 10K and 5K courses start outside the South gate on Vilas Park Drive. For the 5K events, participants who choose to walk or push strollers are asked to position themselves at the back of the starting area. The Kids Fun Run begins outside the North gate at the intersection of Drake and Randall. The children's route goes around Vilas Park and down Vilas Park Drive, concluding at the south entrance of the Zoo. Zoo staff and cheerleaders are stationed along the route to provide guidance to young runners.
Adults may accompany young children in the Fun Run but cannot register for it themselves. All registered participants in the 5K and 10K events receive a Run Wild t-shirt. Race packets are available for collection at the Guest Services building starting September 11. Participants are encouraged to pick up packets before the event day to ensure specific t-shirt size availability. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
