Hell Creek Half & 50K
The Hell Creek races take place on the Switchgrass single-track mountain bike trail at Wilson State Park near Sylvan Grove, Kansas. The trail is exposed with few trees, runs alongside Wilson Lake, and is described as rugged yet fully runnable. The course is heavily marked with ribbons, flags, and wrong-way signs.
- Half marathon: one ~13 mile loop with an initial 1/3 mile on pavement.
- 50k: one 19 mile loop followed by the half marathon loop, roughly 32 miles total.
There are two staffed aid stations at the start/finish and at "Hell Hill," plus an unmanned water and Proxima C station at mile 5 and another around mile 13 on the Hell Creek Loop (50k only). Aid stations provide water, soda, typical ultra foods, and Proxima C Endurance Fuel. Restrooms are available at the start/finish, a porta potty will be located near the second full aid station, and hot showers are available year round at Big Bluestem campground about 3/4 mile from the start/finish.
Race rules note a course cutoff at 5:00 PM. Pacers are not permitted and crew support is restricted to the start/finish area only. Drop bags are allowed at Hell Hill and the start/finish. Minimum age to race is 16; runners under 18 must provide a guardian signed waiver. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
