Course and logistics
All races use the Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail. The courses are arranged as 20-mile loops: one loop for the 20-miler, three loops for the 100K, five loops for the 100-miler, and seven loops for the Pure Hell 140. Elevation gain for each distance: 10k 442 ft, 20-mile 2,024 ft, 100K 6,072 ft, 100-mile 10,120 ft, Pure Hell 140 14,168 ft. Trails are single-track and mostly open, with views of Wilson State Park and Wilson Lake.
Two manned aid stations are on course (start/finish and "Hell Hill"), plus one unmanned water station at mile 5. Hell Hill falls near miles 10.5 and 16.75 of the loop. The maximum distance between water access points is 6.25 miles. The 10k course does not pass any aid stations.
Rules and services
Pacers are permitted only for the 100-miler and Pure Hell 140 after three laps; pacers must start at manned aid stations and may not carry items to runners on course. Crew access is limited to the two manned aid stations; 20-mile crews may not access Hell Hill. Runners must carry a means to hold water and be at least 18 years old. Cutoffs are set by elapsed time: 20-mile 10 hours, 100K 24 hours, 100-mile 32 hours, Pure Hell 140 52 hours. Swag and finisher items vary by distance, and there is a pet-specific finisher medal for dogs or cats that run with their owner. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
