Course and logistics

The course consists of approximately 20-mile loops with no repetition of loop sections: one loop for the 20-mile race, three loops for the 100k, five loops for the 100-mile, and seven loops for the 140-mile. The 10K is a shortened version of the loop and will use a cutoff. The trail is rugged single-track with very few trees and is heavily marked with ribbons and wrong-way signs. Elevation gain figures are provided by distance: 10K - 442 ft; 20-mile - 2,024 ft; 100k - 6,072 ft; 100-mile - 10,120 ft; 140-mile - 14,168 ft.

Restrooms are available at the start/finish, with porta-potties at the Hell Hill aid station. There is no on-course aid station for the 10K, so 10K participants must carry their own supplies. Hot showers are available year-round at the start/finish and at Big Bluestem Campground about 3/4 mile away. Aid stations will feature Proxima C electrolyte/carbohydrate drink and typical aid station items. Photographers will take pictures that are available free to download within 1-2 weeks.

Awards, swag and special rules

Male and female top three finishers in each category will receive awards. Finishers receive distance-specific swag and a beer; examples include shirts and drawstring bags for 10K and 20-mile, a 100k buckle for 100k finishers, and a 100-mile buckle for 100-mile finishers (a sub-24-hour buckle replaces the 100-mile buckle). The Pure Hell 140 finishers receive a specific finishers' buckle. The Pure Hell 140 requires proof of a previous 100-mile finish to register. A costume contest runs during the event with cash-equivalent race credit prizes for top three places. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
