Hell Canyon
Hell Canyon is a 5 mile trail race set for August 29, 2026 at Hell Canyon Trail near Custer, South Dakota. The course begins with a climb to an overlook, then follows the Hell Canyon Trail with scenic views before descending into the canyon and finishing with a downhill section. The route includes several creek crossings.
Registration options include a standard 5 Miler, a 5 Miler with a Hell Canyon hat, and a hat-only purchase; a youth entry is available free for participants 16 and under with no swag. Published registration prices include mandatory fees. Black Hills Runners Club members receive a discount when they enter using a member ID, and non-members can register for membership during the registration process. Registration closes on August 28, 2026.
The trailhead is located about 11 miles west of Custer on Highway 16, just past the entrance to Jewel Cave at the bottom of the hill on the right. Parking at the trailhead is limited, and car-pooling is recommended. After the race there will be doorprizes and rootbeer floats available.
