Mount Rushmore Half Marathon
The Mount Rushmore Half Marathon takes place on September 12, 2026 in the Keystone area of South Dakota. The event starts near Ghost Canyon Getaway in Hermosa and finishes in Keystone at the Borglum Story Museum. The listed distance is a half marathon.
The course begins with about three miles on a well-packed dirt road before turning to pavement. The route has sustained uphill running with an elevation gain of 1,850 ft and a maximum elevation of 5,440 ft, then a final downhill into Keystone. The course is not accessible due to its incline. The event uses chip timing and has a four hour time limit, roughly 18 minutes per mile.
Aid stations and services are provided on course. There are five aid stations, with a medic located at the mile 7 station. On-course amenities include toilets, water, Gnarly Hydrate, Honey Stinger gels, and fruit at later stations. The event is cup free; participants should bring a reusable cup, bottle, or hydration solution.
Logistics include parking at both the start and finish and shuttle service between Keystone and the start line. Expo and bib pickup are scheduled for September 11 with expo hours 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm and bib pickup 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at a Keystone hotel. An on-site Vacation Races Campground offers primitive campsites, limited RV space without hookups, tent rentals, toilets, water, and campfires. Quiet hours and forest service fire rules apply.
