Heartland 50
Heartland 50 is an out and back ultramarathon held near Cassoday, Kansas, that runs mostly on backcountry gravel roads with less than one mile of paved surface. Much of the course passes through open range across the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie and offers long prairie views.
Distances offered
- 50 mile
- 50K
- 25K
All distances use the same marked route and there is a 15 hour cutoff for completion. The 50 mile requires runners to reach the 25 mile turnaround within a specified intermediate cutoff. Course markings include metal washers tied with ribbon and some flour markings on the road in dry conditions.
Support and logistics include multiple manned aid stations and unmanned water stations. The 50 mile has five manned aid stations and three crew access points where drop bags may be used. The 50K has three manned aid stations and crew access at the turnaround. The 25K has one manned halfway turnaround aid station and no crew access there. Packet pickup is available on race day at the Cassoday Community Center. All finishers receive a tri blend shirt and a finisher award. Free race day photos are provided after the event.
Race rules note no pacers, no dogs on the course, crew vehicles are not allowed on the course, strict no littering, and that runners must check in at each aid station. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
