Heartland - Cassoday, KS
Heartland offers a range of road and ultra distances on predominantly backcountry gravel and dirt roads around Cassoday, Kansas, traversing Butler, Greenwood and Chase counties and the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie. Distances include:
- 125 mile
- 100 mile
- 100K (including a Teter Rock 100K option)
- 50 mile
- Marathon
- 1/2 Marathon
The 100 mile course contains rolling hills and about 6,000 feet of climb and uses less than one mile of paved surface. Many sections run through open range with long views of the prairie. The 125 mile option adds a roughly 30 mile loop toward Eureka with minimal course marking; runners in that distance receive maps and must navigate portions with limited signage.
Aid and support structure is specified: the 100 mile uses 22 aid stations with crew access at multiple locations and an additional roving aid station for the 125 mile. Drop bag and crew access counts vary by distance. Pacers are allowed from Matfield Green onward for the longer distances. Time limits and intermediate cutoffs apply by distance, including a 38 hour limit for the 125 mile and a 30 hour limit for the 100 mile and 100K.
Cassoday is located near I-35, about 34 miles south of Emporia and 22 miles north of El Dorado. Nearest commercial airports noted are Wichita and Kansas City. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
