The event is based in Cassoday, Kansas, on mostly rural gravel and dirt roads through the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie. The 100-mile course contains under one mile of paved road, rolling hills and about 6,000 feet of climb. The 125-mile race follows the Heartland 100 route with an additional 30-mile loop out to Eureka. The 100K routes use out-and-back sections of the 100 course, with the Teter Rock 100K including a detour to Teter Rock and back. The marathon is a point-to-point course with a 1.2-mile loop in Cassoday then out to Teterville Road. The half marathon is an out-and-back from Teterville Road to Teter Rock.
Support, cutoffs and key rules
Aid and support: the 100-mile has 22 aid stations and the 125-mile adds a roving/mobile aid station overnight. Other counts: 14 aid stations for the 100K, 12 for the 50-mile, and 6 for the marathon. Crew access and drop-bag availability vary by distance. Pacers are allowed from Matfield Green (42.5 miles for 100 milers, 67.5 miles for 125 milers) to the finish; only one pacer may accompany a runner at a time.
Cutoffs and limits include a 38-hour limit for the 125-mile, a 30-hour limit for the 100-mile and 100K, and time limits and intermediate cutoffs for the 50-mile, marathon and half marathon as published by race management. Required gear and conduct: runners must carry a hydration device, wear race numbers on the front, avoid littering, and follow crew and course rules.
