About the race
Hades Hill Fell Race takes place in the South/West Pennines, starting from the Red Lion in The Square, Whitworth, Lancashire (grid reference SD885177). The race is held in England and is organised under a Fell Runners Association permit with UK Athletics insurance.
The course is 8 km / 5 miles long with 360 m / 1181 ft of ascent and is classified as Category BS. It begins with a tough uphill section before the route levels out and follows a rolling line over Brown Wardle, Middle Hill and Hades Hill, then returns for a field finish above the start line.
A cut off is in place because of early nightfall. Anyone not reaching the top of Brown Wardle (approximately 1.3 miles from the start with 550 ft of climb) within 24 minutes from race start is retired from the race.
Full body cover in line with FRA kit requirements is needed, including waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and integrated hood, hat, gloves, map of the route, compass, whistle and emergency food. A head torch is also required. A decision is taken on the day whether to relax the kit requirements.
Entry is available both in advance and on the day. Pre entry fees are £6.00 for FRA members and £8.00 for non members. Entry on the day costs £7.00 for FRA members and £9.00 for non members. The minimum age is 18 and junior races are not held.
Teams are allowed, with the first three runners to count for both male and female teams. The race was established in 1968 in aid of Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
