About the race

The GristMill Grind is a trail event held at Franklin Creek State Natural Area in Franklin Grove, IL. It is advertised as the sixth annual running of a 5K and a 10K course that follows natural trails, bluffs, and sections of gravel road.

The course is described as technical with multiple hills and an elevation gain of approximately 100 ft per mile. Runners cross Franklin Creek several times: five creek crossings on the 10K and two on the 5K. Water will be available at the Start/Finish area and at the Sunday shelter, which serves as a mid course point for the 10K. Participants are asked to bring their own disposable cup or hydration bladder.

All proceeds benefit the Franklin Creek Conservation Association to support park programs, expansion, and improvements. Custom awards are given to the top three male and female finishers in each distance and to top ruckers in each distance. Event shirts are available for purchase for $20 and are guaranteed for registrations completed before August 15, 2026. Registration windows and fees are listed by the organizer, with tiered pricing before and after July 31, 2026, and a race day fee option. Check in takes place at the Hausen Knox Shelter at the race site. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
