The event takes place in the Shenandoah Valley and its courses pass through the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. The event is scheduled during the fall foliage season.
Distances
The event offers four trail running distances:
- 100M (100 Miles / 167.4 km)
- 100K (100 km)
- 50K (50 km)
- 21K (21 km)
Course and Terrain
The routes are described as passing through national forest, featuring mountain views, ridges, peaks, and valleys. The terrain is noted as demanding and highly technical.
Participation and Registration
Registration is required in advance, as there is no race day registration. Online registration closes a few days before the event, and on-site registration may be available at the expo for open distances. Runners must be at least 18 years old for the 100M, 100K, and 50K distances, and at least 16 years old for the 21K. Registration fees vary by distance and increase over time. The registration is non-refundable and non-transferable, but paid entries are eligible for a one-time deferral to the following year's event if requested by a specified deadline.
Awards and Series
The event is part of the UTMB World Series. Finishers collect Running Stones, which can be used for entry into the lottery for the UTMB World Series Finals. The top three male and female finishers in the 100M, 100K, and 50K distances gain automatic qualification for specific races at the UTMB World Series Finals.

Registered runners receive a race bib, shirt, personal collapsible cup, access to aid stations, timing, medical assistance, and post-race food. Finishers receive different awards: medals for the 21K and 50K, a special gift for the 100K, and a belt buckle for the 100M. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
