Trail Running in Ottawa County

The Grand Explorers' Trail Race is an annual event held in Jenison, Michigan. The course connects two local natural areas, Grand River County Park and Grand Ravines County Park. Participants travel between these locations via the Idema Explorers Trail, with routes specifically designed to showcase the Grand River Greenway.

The event features three distinct distances:

  • 10K
  • 5K
  • 1 Mile Kids Run/Walk

The terrain consists of a mixture of surfaces. The 5K route includes approximately two miles of paved trail, while the 10K route includes roughly four miles of pavement. The remaining portions of the courses take place on dirt or grass trails, which include roots, uneven ground, and potential mud depending on weather conditions. The 10K course specifically includes a section with steps and crosses the Idema suspension bridge.

The race starts at Grand River County Park and follows the river toward Grand Ravines County Park. Participants pass through diverse landscapes including meadows, woods, and an old covered bridge. The elevation includes a slight incline that provides views of the river. The event is open to runners and walkers, and dogs are permitted to join. Proceeds from the race support projects managed by the Ottawa County Parks Foundation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
