Grand Canal Canter - Winding Paths
The Grand Canal Canter is held twice each year with autumn and spring editions; upcoming dates include 25th October 2026 and 14th March 2027. The event offers multiple race distances on canal paths in Mid Devon, all starting at Tiverton Canal Basin.
Distances
- Marathon
- 20 Miler (March only)
- Half Marathon
- 10k
All routes run 100% on the Grand Western Canal Path along hard packed gravel. Route notes vary by date: in March the 10k turns at Tiverton Bridge Car Park, the Half turns at Sampford Peverel, and the 20 Miler and Marathon have turns near Burlsecombe before returning to Tiverton; the Marathon then includes an additional 10k out-and-back section. In October the 10k turns at Tiverton Bridge Car Park, the Half and Marathon turn at Sampford Peverel, and the Marathon includes a second out-and-back.
Elevation is low, with approximately 90 ft ascent in the Half Marathon, 180 ft in the Marathon, and 150 ft in the 20 Miler. The event is cupless: runners must carry a water bottle, cup, or running backpack. Water containers are available to refill about every three miles but no cups are provided. A bespoke Grand Canal Canter medal is presented to all finishers. From March 2027 an optional event T-shirt will be available for purchase for £15. Age limits apply: runners must be over 18, and over 16 for the 10k.
The October 2026 timetable and cut offs are provisional; published cut offs include a Marathon limit of 6 hours 30 minutes, Half Marathon 3 hours 15 minutes, 10k 2 hours, and a 20 Miler cut off of 5 hours. The March timetable is listed as to be confirmed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
