Gold Coast Backyard Ultra
The Gold Coast Backyard Ultra is a pursuit of endurance held at Doug Jennings Park, Main Beach. This inaugural event follows the traditional backyard ultra format where participants must complete a 6.71 km loop every hour, on the hour. The race has no predetermined finish line or duration; instead, it continues until only one person remains to complete a loop solo. If a runner fails to start a loop on the hour or does not finish a yard within the sixty-minute window, they are removed from the competition.
The course is located at The Spit and features a variety of surfaces, including road, grass, trail, and beach sections. The route is fully marked and offers approximately 16 m of ascent and 19 m of descent per loop. Registration is limited to a total of 300 participants.
Participants receive access to a recovery zone equipped with ice baths, foam rollers, and recovery boots. A communal marquee provides snacks and hydration. Specific recognition is provided for the last person standing and the "assist" (the runner who completes the second-to-last loop). Additionally, runners who reach the 160 km mark (24 yards) are eligible for specific sponsor draws.
A team challenge is available for groups of four runners. While members compete as individuals, their total completed yards are combined to determine a collective team score for separate prizes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
