DeKalb 5K Celebration
The Girls on the Run Northwest Illinois DeKalb 5K is the season closing event for local Girls on the Run programs. It is a celebratory, noncompetitive 5K on a 3.1 mile course held in Hopkins Park, DeKalb, Illinois on May 22, 2027. The event is intended to give program participants a tangible sense of accomplishment at the end of the season.
The 5K includes community activities such as decoration stations, photo booths, bingo and merchandise sales. The course is accessible for people with disabilities and offers designated parking. Participants may walk, run, roll, push or skip at their own pace; typical finish times reported range from about 25 minutes for the fastest participants to 30–50 minutes for most participants.
Girls on the Run participants receive finisher medals to mark program completion. Adult 5K Buddies and other community participants receive a commemorative decorated race bib. GOTR girls do not need to register separately for the 5K because registration is included as part of the program fee; community members and 5K Buddies must register and sign liability waivers.
Safety measures include race bibs for every participant, assignment of a 5K Buddy for each participant, course monitoring with head counts, and a council safety plan that trains staff and volunteers. Volunteer roles include course marshals, running buddies, water station attendants, first aid, lead bike and finish line support; volunteers appointed by the council undergo background checks.
