5K Celebration: Confidence through Accomplishment
Girls on the Run Northern Virginia concludes each season with celebratory 5K events that give program participants a tangible sense of accomplishment. The council schedules two events on November 21 and November 22; specific locations and start times are to be determined. Program participants are automatically registered for the 5K and receive a commemorative medal to mark completion.
Registration pricing is tiered: Early Bird $35 (August 17–September 30), Regular $40 (October 1–31), Late $45 (November 1–20) and Day of $50 (November 21 and 22). Participants who want a 5K t-shirt must register by September 30. Packet pick-up is available for those who register after October 31 and for community registrants; pickup locations and times will be announced.
The 5Ks are non-competitive and untimed; the course length is 3.1 miles. Many participants finish in about 30 to 50 minutes, and everyone is encouraged to walk, roll, push, run or skip at their own pace. Events are designed to be accessible for participants with disabilities. A Buddy Runner accompanies some participants to provide safety and encouragement for the full course duration.
Volunteer roles support event operations and include packet distribution, start and finish duties, water stations, course marshals, cheer marshals, activity station helpers, bike marshal and medical tent support. Merchandise will be available at a council tent. Refund requests must be submitted by the end of the Early Bird registration period; later requests are considered on a case by case basis.
