5K Celebration
This event is a season-closing celebratory 5K for Girls on the Run Northern Virginia participants. Each program participant receives a commemorative medal to mark completion. The event is scheduled tentatively for November 21-22; the exact location and timing are to be determined.
The 5K is non-competitive and untimed. The course length is 3.1 miles and participants are encouraged to walk, run, roll, push, or skip at their own pace. Many participants finish in roughly 30 to 50 minutes. The event is accessible for people with disabilities. Strollers are permitted and are asked to start in the last corral.
Program participants are automatically registered for the 5K; family members and community participants may register separately. A waiver is required for all registrants. T-shirt requests must be submitted by September 30 to be eligible for a shirt. Packet pick-up is planned for Saturday and Sunday of the event weekend, with exact locations and times to be announced.
Buddy Runners accompany participants for safety and encouragement throughout the course. A process exists to update a Buddy Runner if needed. Volunteers are recruited for roles such as packet distribution, course marshals, water stations, start/finish support, and activity stations; volunteers approved by the council undergo a background check. Merchandise will be available at a tent on site. Refunds and inclement weather policies are handled by the council and are subject to registration deadlines and conditions.
