Event overview
The Galena Sky Trail Race is a timed trail running event at Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena, Illinois. The event in 2026 is scheduled for May 16 and offers two timed options: an eight-hour event and a four-hour event. Registration packages include a race shirt, a finisher medal, and a post-race meal.
Course and format
The race uses a looped course on resort trails that are also used for skiing in winter. The course runs along terrain with views across the Mississippi River to Iowa and Wisconsin. Runners complete as many loops as they choose within their chosen time limit; standings are based on total mileage recorded by timing equipment.
- Long loop: 2.91 miles
- Short loop: 0.6 miles (short loop opens partway through the event; loops must be completed before the event cutoff to count)
The event features an on-site after-party with music and a DJ, and a post-race meal prepared by the resort.
Logistics and awards
Packet pickup is provided on the day before and the morning of the race. Pricing includes an early-bird rate in effect until January 1, 2026; meal tickets for the after party have separate fees. The race awards a 3-D finisher medal to all finishers, overall male and female awards for top three, 10-year age-group awards, and a prize for best Nordic Viking warrior costume. The organizer offers rollover and credit policies for deferrals and a volunteer option for rollover credit. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
