Event overview
The Freighter Festival of Races is scheduled for March 28, 2026 in Sault Sainte Marie, MI (501 Ashmun St., 49783). The second annual event, hosted by Yooper Running Company, includes three races:
- 5K Run
- 5K Walk
- Half Marathon
The event is limited to 250 participants. The listing shows 25 participants currently registered. Courses run east along the St. Mary’s River and include views of upbound and downbound freighters.
Registration, course and on-site services
Registration fees vary by date. A long-sleeve T-shirt option is offered for $20; select sizes will be available at packet pickup. Early packet pickup is scheduled for Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at a to-be-determined location. Race day packet pickup is scheduled near the start/finish area from 7:30 to 8:45 am. Street and lot parking is available throughout downtown Sault Sainte Marie.
The half marathon course will have five aid stations supplying water and Gatorade, located at approximately 1.55, 3.1, 6.55, 10.0, and 11.55 miles. All participants receive a unique freighter medal. Overall awards will be given by gender, masters, and grand masters; age-group first-place awards cover ranges from 0-9 up to 80+. Randomized bib-draw giveaways are planned.
