Event overview
The Freighter Festival of Races takes place on March 28, 2026 in Sault Sainte Marie, MI. The event includes three race options:
- 5K Run
- 5K Walk
- Half Marathon
The course runs east along the St. Marys River and is routed to provide views of upbound and downbound freighters. The event is hosted by Yooper Running Company. Current participant count listed is 43 and the event notes it sells out at 250 participants. All finishers receive a freighter medal.
Logistics and services
Registration pricing and shirt option are listed separately for the 5K events and the half marathon; a long-sleeve shirt is available for an additional $20. Example price points:
- 5K Run and 5K Walk: $20 (2025), rising through staged increases into March 2026 up to $40 on March 27-28.
- Half Marathon: $40 (2025), rising through staged increases into March 2026 up to $65 on March 27-28.
Packet pickup is available early (Friday evening at a to-be-determined location) and on race day near the start/finish area; additional shirts will be available for purchase at pickup. Parking is available on streets and lots throughout downtown Sault Sainte Marie. The half marathon course includes five aid stations supplying water and Gatorade at several mile marks.
