FLATS Trail Half Marathon
The event is a point to point trail half marathon held in Kirksville, MO, that benefits the Forest Lake Area Trail System and supports trail building and maintenance in Adair County. The course uses maintained forest trails and singletrack, runs alongside a lake, and includes roots, rocks, water crossings, and rolling terrain.
There are seven aid stations spaced along the route at roughly mile 1.5, 3.2, 5.2, 7.9, 9.85, 11.3, and 12.5. Aid stations provide water, sports drink, snacks, and gels. The finish area offers water, sports drink, soft drinks, pizza, and snacks. Runners are encouraged to carry some calories or a hydration system to refill at stops.
Awards include prize money for first through third place in the female, male, and nonbinary categories and age-group commemorative pint glasses for the top three in each age group. Prize amounts for top places are $150, $75, and $25 with a course record bonus structure that can increase total winnings. Course records on file are 1:31:19 for women (2017) and 1:20:51 for men (2022).
Packet pickup is available the day before at the ATSU Thompson Campus Center and on race morning at the Thousand Hills State Park marina. A shuttle service runs from the finish back to the start and a single gear bag per runner will be transported from start to finish.
The event has inclusive policies, offers nonbinary registration with equal awards, participates in a fund to reduce entry barriers for underrepresented runners, and follows Trail Sisters standards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
