Route, navigation and safety
The route follows footpaths and trails, including parts of the Pennine Way. The course is not marked; participants must navigate themselves to each checkpoint in the correct ascending order (checkpoints numbered 1 to 9). The organiser provides three manned checkpoints on the route offering snacks and drinks, and free soup and hot drinks at the finish. Full kit is required, including full waterproofs, map and compass, hat and gloves, spare clothing and food. The published route is a recommended line and competitors may make alternative choices so long as they remain on public rights of way, paths, tracks or roads.
