Underground Running Experience in Marengo
The Firecracker 5K is held in Marengo, Indiana, on July 4. This event features a route that incorporates both outdoor sections and a significant underground portion. The course begins at the Marengo Boys and Girls Club and follows SR 64, passing by Marengo Cave.

After the first mile, participants enter an underground warehouse area. This indoor section spans approximately two miles of the total distance. The subterranean environment maintains a constant temperature of 54 degrees year-round, providing separation from the summer heat. The terrain inside the warehouse is described as fast and flat with good lighting, although it includes several hairpin turns and corridors with smooth but offroad-like surfaces.
The outdoor segments of the course include rolling hills and pass through the local town area. After completing the underground loop, the path doubles back to conclude at the local festival grounds.
