Fan Brycheiniog
Fan Brycheiniog is a fell race of 15.5 km (9.6 mi) with 840 m of climb. The event is based at Tafarn y Garreg, Glyntawe SA9 1GS near Dan Yr Ogof Showcaves and forms part of the South Wales Series. Minimum age for entry is over 18. The advertised pre entry fee is £9 via Fabian4, with an overall entry limit of 100 and entry on the day if spaces remain. The race is insured by WFRA.
The route mostly follows good paths and sheep trods but includes sections with exposure, notably on Fan Hir ridge where there is exposure to the right only. The path returning to the finish from Llyn Y Fan Fawr is stony and technical in places. In poor visibility navigation and path choice can be difficult and the use of map and compass is important; in good visibility the local geography provides clear guidance.
The course crosses significant fell and mountain terrain with heights up to about 900 m. Surfaces include rough tracks and challenging but runnable off track areas. Advanced navigation skills are required as there is no waymarking. Competent mountain skills and self reliance are expected. Escape routes to roads in the north take about a 40 minute drive from the start. Weather and seasonal conditions may change suddenly and affect the route.
