Fan Brycheiniog
Fan Brycheiniog is a mountain race held from Tafarn y Garreg in Glyntawe, near Dan Yr Ogof Showcaves. The course covers 15.5 km (9.6 mi) with about 840 m (2756 ft) of ascent. It is part of the South Wales Series.
Terrain is largely rough tracks and sheep trods with open fell sections. There is some exposure on Fan Hir ridge on the right side only. The return path from Llyn Y Fan Fawr is stony and technical in places. In poor visibility navigation and path choice can be difficult; use of map and compass is important. Escape routes to roads in the north involve about a 40 minute drive from the start.
The event is in significant fell and mountain terrain with heights up to roughly 900 m. Participants are expected to have advanced navigation skills and competent mountain skills. Local knowledge is beneficial and significant experience is required. Weather and season can make conditions challenging and may affect route safety. Some sections would be difficult for a retiring or injured runner to leave.
Course records are 1:15:39 for the male category and 1:36:34 for the female category, both set in 2017. Minimum age is over 18 and junior races may be held. Pre-entry fee is £9 through Fabian4. Entry is limited to 100 and places on the day may be offered if spaces remain. A change of start location is possible. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
