Exe to Axe Trail Race
The Exe to Axe is a trail running event held along the South West Coast Path in Devon. The primary route spans 22 miles from Exmouth to Seaton, involving approximately 4,000 feet of ascent. The 2026 edition marks the 22nd year of the event, which utilizes chip timing for all participants.
Participants can choose from three distinct race formats:
- Exe to Axe: A 22 mile solo race from Exmouth to Seaton for runners aged 18 and older.
- Exe to Axe Relay: The 22 mile distance completed by teams of 2, 3, or 4 runners, with hand-overs at designated checkpoints.
- Sid to Axe: A shorter solo option covering the second half of the course from Sidmouth to Seaton.
The course features multiple checkpoints providing water and snacks located near Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, and Branscombe. Strict cut-off times are enforced at these locations to ensure the safety of all participants. The overall time limit for the full distance is 7 hours, while the Sid to Axe has a 6-hour limit.
The event starts in Exmouth at Sideshore, with the finish line located on the beach in Seaton. Facilities at the finish include shelter and toilets. Optional pre-race transport is available via coaches from Seaton to the starting points in Exmouth and Sidmouth. Runners may also utilize a baggage transfer service to move personal items from the start to the finish area.
The race allows the use of running poles, provided participants are mindful of others on narrow path sections. Bone-conducting headphones are permitted, though in-ear or over-ear models are not allowed. Dogs are not permitted to accompany runners on the course.
