El Camino Maitland
El Camino Maitland is an annual fundraising hike organized by the Maitland Trail Association in Ontario. This two-day event takes place over a single weekend in September, following the winding route of the lower Maitland River. The course traverses diverse environments, including forests, farmland, river vistas, and autumn meadows. The terrain features natural trails with steep hills, valley stairs, and uneven ground.
Participants have the flexibility to hike both days or select either Saturday or Sunday. The full two-day route covers nearly 52 km. On the first day, the trail runs from near Auburn to Benmiller, while the second day covers the section from Goderich to Benmiller.
The available distance options include:
- Saturday: 31 km, 17 km, or 11 km
- Sunday: 20 km, or 12 km
Each morning, hikers check in at the Benmiller Community Hall and are transported by shuttle bus to their respective starting points. The route is supported by volunteer-staffed checkpoints providing water, snacks, and basic first aid. Navigation is aided by trail blazes, signage, and kilometer markers. Hikers under middle age (18) must be accompanied by an adult. Participants may also access discounted camping at the nearby Falls Reserve Conservation Area.
