Event Overview
The Eagle 5000 Turkey Trot is a track-based running race held at Thomas Edison High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Unlike traditional road-based holiday events, this competition takes place entirely on the school track. The race is held in person and proceeds as scheduled regardless of rain or weather conditions.
The event features a 5000m distance divided into multiple timed heats. This structure organizes participants into groups based on their predicted finishing times to ensure athletes run with others of similar speeds.
Heat Structure and Competition
Heats are organized by time brackets, ranging from a 55-minute pace down to a sub-16-minute pace. The specific heat breakdowns include:
- 25:00 to 55:00
- 23:00 to 24:59
- 21:00 to 22:59
- 19:40 to 20:59
- 18:45 to 19:39
- 18:00 to 18:44
- 16:45 to 17:59
- 16:00 to 16:44
- 14:30 to 15:59
Awards are presented to the overall top three male and female finishers within each individual heat.
Location and Logistics
The competition is hosted at 5801 Franconia Road. On-site parking is available at the high school, though the organizers note that space is limited. Packet pickup is conducted at the high school both the evening before the event and on the day of the race. The event serves as a fundraiser for the local Thomas Edison Cross Country and Track and Field programs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
