Dogtown 5 Mile Trail Race
The Cape Ann Trail Stewards organizes the ninth annual Dogtown Trail Race on a primarily off-road course. The route is a 5.4 mile trail through Dogtown Common and adjacent conserved land, and it passes through Squam Path, the New England Forestry Foundation Norton Memorial Forest, Whale's Jaw, the Luce Trail, Briar Swamp, and the Rockport Town Forest.
Terrain varies widely along the course, from carriage roads with minor rocks and roots to more technical sections with extensive large rocks that may require boulder-hopping. The marked course includes support such as safety monitors and a water stop. Course maps are provided, including a version on GaiaGPS with downloadable GPX and KML files.
Parking is organized at Evans Field near 3 Station Square in Rockport; participants walk across the field to reach the registration and check-in area near the water tower at the top of Summit Avenue. Walkers are welcome and start behind runners at the same time as the running field. Preview runs of the course are offered on an earlier date.
Online registration fees are listed as $25 for CATS members and $35 for non-members, with higher race day fees. A promotional registration code can reduce the fee to $25. The first 100 registrants are guaranteed event T shirts and prizes are awarded for overall and age group placements. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
