Event overview

Die to Run Backyard Ultra is a last-person-standing race held at the Beechcraft Airport Hangar, Hatbox Sports Complex in Muskogee, Oklahoma (640 S 40th St). The event takes place on May 16, 2026. The course is a flat out-and-back on the paved Hatbox path. Distances change each lap, so the turnaround point varies hourly.

Format and rules

Each hour a six-sided die is rolled to determine that hour's out-and-back lap distance. Possible distances are 1–6 miles. During the first two hours, a roll of 5 or 6 is adjusted to 4 miles. After six hours, any roll of 1 becomes 3 miles. After 12 hours, any roll of 2 becomes 4 miles. Runners must complete the designated distance within a one-hour cutoff to be eligible for the next lap. Runners not present in the starting corral when the next lap begins are disqualified. Personal aid is not allowed on the course; runners may carry their own supplies and aid is available at the main aid station at the start/finish area. Crews are allowed only in the designated base camp area and may not assist runners on the course. The race continues until one runner completes one final loop alone; that runner is the winner and all others are listed as DNF if they do not complete that final loop.

Weather, cancellations and refunds

The event proceeds in normal adverse weather unless conditions are deemed unsafe by the Race Director. In extreme weather such as lightning or a tornado warning the race may be paused for at least one hour or canceled. Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
