Devil's Toll Race
The Devil's Toll Race is a roughly 13 mile trail event on the Ozark Trail that runs from Taum Sauk Mountain through Mina Sauk Falls and the rock formation known as the Devils' Toll Gate, then over Proffit and Wildcat Mountains and past the Scour of Taum Sauk reservoir to a Black River crossing at Johnson Shut-ins State Park. The course includes about 1,400 feet of elevation change and marked trail blazes for navigation.
The event emphasizes rugged, technical trail travel with extensive rock, steep terrain, and limited cell service. An on-course aid station is planned midcourse, but participants are expected to carry water and nutrition; water filtering is limited and primarily available in the first five miles. Suggested items to carry include insect repellent, basic first aid, sturdy trail shoes or hiking boots, trekking poles, food and electrolyte drinks, and at least one liter of water with more recommended for longer efforts.
This event follows a minimalist concept and is held as a fundraiser for the Ozark Trail Association, a nonprofit organization that develops and maintains the Ozark Trail. Race rules state no pets, a Leave No Trace policy, no smoking or vaping on shuttles or on course, and that all participants must ride the shuttle to the start line. No refunds, deferrals, or transfers of registration fees are offered. Custom commemorative patches are provided for finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
