About the race
The Devil on the Divide is a high-altitude trail event held in Empire, Colorado, offering two point to point courses. The event is sold out for 2026; the 50K waitlist remains open.
Courses and terrain:
- 50K - top altitude over 13,000 feet; about 6,500 feet of climbing.
- 22K - about 3,400 feet of elevation gain.
Both courses are 100% dirt with the majority on single track trail. The race begins at the Jones Pass trailhead (across from the Henderson Mine) and finishes at the Empire Ball Field / Herman Gulch area. The route includes sections on the Continental Divide Trail, Herman Lake approach, Watrous Gulch, and Bard Creek Trail, and contains stretches that are undefined for long distances; runners should watch for course markings and cairns.
Logistics and safety: participant check-in and parking occur at Minton Park (Empire Ball Field). Participants are shuttled to the start; there is no participant parking at the trailhead. Bag drop is handled at the Empire Ball Field for transport to Herman Gulch. Restrooms are located at Empire Ball Field, Jones Pass TH, and Herman Gulch TH. Crews and spectators are allowed only at Herman Gulch and the Empire Ball Field. No dogs or pacers on course; trekking poles are allowed.
Aid and requirements: aid stations are located at multiple mile markers, with some stations water only. Runners must check in at each aid station. Participants must carry a hydration system that holds at least 24 oz. 50K runners are required to carry an emergency blanket and whistle. Prior ultra running experience is required for 50K entrants; trail running experience at high altitude is highly recommended for 22K entrants.
Weather and race control: the course is remote and subject to rapid weather changes including rain, lightning, hail, snow, and freezing temperatures. The race director may delay, shorten, or cancel the event for safety; no refunds will be issued in the event of cancellation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
