Desert's Edge Triathlon Series
The Desert's Edge Triathlon Series takes place at Highline Lake State Park in Fruita, Colorado. This multi-day event features a variety of triathlon formats held at the edge of the desert in western Colorado. The series is produced by the Grand Junction Sports Commission and is not a USAT-sanctioned race, meaning no USAT license is required to participate.
The weekend includes several race categories:
- Olympic Road: A 1500m swim, 40k bike, and 10k run.
- Sprint Road: A 750m swim, 20k bike, and 5k run.
- Off-Road Sprint: A 750m swim, 23k bike, and 5k run.
- Collegiate Sprint: A draft-legal 750m swim, 20k bike, and 5k run, reserved for NCAA triathlon college athletes.
Relay options are available for all distances, allowing teams of two to three members to compete together by tagging in the transition zone. The swim takes place in Highline Lake, where water temperatures typically range between 62 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit; wetsuits are permitted. The transition area is located on the grass between the swim beach and the parking lot.
Participants have access to a water station on the run course, located approximately 1.5 miles in. Post-race refreshments including bagels, bananas, and water are provided at the finish area.
