15th Edition of the Des Plaines River Trail Races
The Des Plaines River Trail Races take place in Lake County, Illinois, on a course that begins and ends at the Half Day Forest Preserve. This event features four distinct distances on an out-and-back route along the northern portion of the Des Plaines River Trail system. The terrain consists of a flat, wide, crushed gravel surface that is free of roots and rocks, passing through a mix of forests and wetlands.
The available distances include:
- 50 Mile (16+ years old)
- 50K (16+ years old)
- Marathon (16+ years old)
- 1/2 Marathon (12+ years old)
The Marathon distance is a Boston Qualifier. The course is designed for speed with minimal road crossings; the marathon includes two crossings, while the half-marathon has none. Most road intersections are handled via bridges or viaducts. Because the trail runs along the river, runners may encounter water on the path, and an alternate course is utilized in the event of flooding.
This is a cupless event, meaning participants must carry their own hydration vessels, such as bottles or packs. Aid stations provide water and snacks, with the number of stations varying by distance. Post-race amenities include a grilled meal with beef or veggie options and a complimentary beverage for finishers of legal age. Participants who finish their respective distances receive a medal, and specific awards are provided for overall and age group winners. Participants must register by August 15th to be guaranteed an event t-shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
