Event Overview

Death by 5k Oak Mountain is a 24-hour endurance challenge held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham. The format requires participants to complete ten separate 5 km runs over the course of a single day and night. Each 5 km segment begins exactly 2.5 hours after the previous start. Participants must be at the starting line for every interval and must finish each lap before the next one begins.

Course Details

The event takes place near the Dogwood Pavilion at the South Trailhead. The route starts on the Lake Trail and transitions onto Rattlesnake Ridge, forming a counterclockwise loop that returns to the starting area. Because the schedule includes several night segments, runners are required to use headlamps, hand lights, or other forms of illumination.

Logistics and Amenities

Between the scheduled runs, participants can rest in their vehicles in the parking lot or use the grass camping field across the road for tent camping. The tent area includes access to a bathroom and shared electrical poles. Truck campers and vans are permitted in the parking lot if they occupy only one space.

The event provides five meals with hot food at scheduled intervals, along with various snacks and drinks throughout the 24-hour period. All participants receive an event shirt, and those who complete the full challenge receive a custom-made coffin as a finisher award. Registration is limited to 200 participants, with a waitlist available once the capacity is reached.
