Death at DuPuis (A Backyard Event)
The event is a last person standing race in Canal Point, FL, held inside the Dupuis Management Area. Runners repeatedly cover a loop of 4.166667 miles; the race restarts at the top of each hour and continues until only one runner completes the loop on time or everyone quits.
Organizers run the event as a not for profit competition and collect donations for the local Loxahatchee chapter of the Florida Trail Association. Race costs include shirts, porta potties, awards, timing, and a stated minimum donation goal of $2,000 to the Loxahatchee chapter. The event notes past contributions exceeding $10,000 to the FTA.
Race procedures include audible warning whistles at three, two and one minute prior to each hour. Coolers, chairs and canopies may be set up at the start and finish on a first come first serve basis. There are no refunds if a runner decides to drop; those entry fees go into the donation pot for the Loxahatchee FTA chapter. Organizers may provide financial assistance for hardship cases on request.
The Dupuis Management Area is described as a multiuse natural area with ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes, pine flatwoods and remnant Everglades marsh, plus hiking and equestrian trails, a nature center and primitive camping opportunities.
