Event Overview
The Day of The Dead 5K & 10k is a community running event held in Fair Oaks, California. Based at Wild Runners Fair Oaks, the event incorporates Mexican cultural traditions including live music, stilt walkers, and a collective La Ofrenda. Participants are invited to bring photographs, flowers, or nostalgic items to place on the memorial space by early morning. The event also features a costume contest and a post-race festival with food vendors and an expo showcasing wellness and fitness services.
Distances and Course
The event offers several race options for different age groups and abilities:
- 10k Run: A 6.2-mile running race.
- 5k Run: A 3.2-mile out-and-back course.
- Calaveritas Run: Youth races including a 0.25-mile course for children under 6 and a 0.5-mile course for ages 7-10.
The 5k course starts with a 0.5-mile downhill section through Old Fair Oaks Village and continues onto the paved American River Trail toward Bannister Park. The route is entirely on paved roads and trails, making it accessible for those using strollers. The race concludes with a half-mile ascent back to the finish line.
Participation and Awards
All registered participants receive a bib number with a timing device, a short-sleeved event shirt, and a finisher medal. Runners also receive a coupon for one free tamale redeemable at the post-event festival. Managed pet participation is permitted in the 5k, provided dogs remain on a leash and a waiver is signed.
The awards ceremony recognizes overall male and female winners, along with the top three finishers in various age divisions ranging from 12 & Under to 80+. Performance prizes include gift cards and sponsor-provided apparel. A separate costume contest also awards gift cards for the top three entries.
