About the race
Cwm Nant-y-Groes is a winter fell race held around Cwm Nant-y-Groes near Sixbells, Abertillery (NP13 2PR). The date and inclusion in the South Wales Winter Hill Series are to be confirmed. The course distance is 9 km / 5.6 mi with approximately 550 m / 1804 ft of ascent.
The route begins with a mandatory section to a stile onto open mountain. Once over the stile runners may choose their own line to visit checkpoints in order: cp1, cp2, cp3. From cp3 a mandatory anticlockwise loop must be followed; this loop is flagged with small red flags which remain on the runner's right. Halfway around the loop runners visit cp4 at the tree line and then return on the loop to cp3. After rejoining cp3 runners may again take any route that visits cp2 the Brook, cp1 the trig, and back down to the stile before following the mandatory path to the finish.
Navigational skills are required and local knowledge is beneficial. Full kit is required and will be enforced on the day; entrants without the required kit will not be allowed to run. Event start and parking are at the overflow car park of the Bluebirds football ground, Sixbells. Entry fees are listed as £5 for WFRA members, £7 for non WFRA online, and £10 on the day.
