Creede Donkey Dash pack burro race
The Creede Donkey Dash is a pack burro race held in Creede, Colorado, with teams of a runner and a burro. The event begins and ends on Main Street near Basham Park and follows trails and service roads through the historic Creede Mining District.
The main course covers just under 10 miles and passes notable points such as the Creede Underground Mining Museum, Willow Creek, East Willow Canyon, the Phoenix Park Trailhead, the Weaver Town Site, and the Commodore Mine Ore House. Several historic mine remnants including the Kentucky Belle are visible from the course. The short course is approximately 3 miles and follows an out and back on the Bachelor Loop. A Mini Donkey Race takes place on Main Street; donkeys are provided and the entry fee is $20.
Standard pack burro racing rules apply to all races. Participants may bring their own burro or contact the Visitor Center for rental information. Courses are subject to change due to Forest Service road conditions and an alternate route uses local streets and Forest Road 504. Prizes are awarded in male and female categories with 1st $300, 2nd $200, and 3rd $100. A farmers market and live music run during the event.
Burro racing traces to 19th century Colorado miners who led loaded burros on foot; a local legend about miners racing back to stake a claim is part of the sport's origin story. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
